Have you ever wondered what it feels like to be fed by God? The books of 1 Kings 17 and 19 recount two remarkable instances where Elijah experienced divine provision. After sound health, food becomes essential—it fuels us to perform life’s daily tasks effectively. Without it, we struggle to function, and in fact, good food is key to maintaining good health.

Let’s take a closer look at the events surrounding the times Elijah was fed by God, as recorded in 1 Kings 17:1-7 and 1 Kings 19:5-8.

  1. Turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith: Why would the all-wise, almighty warrior instruct His prophet to hide from man, no less? It may seem unusual, even absurd. Yet, God challenges us to think beyond our limitations and trust Him without overanalyzing His ways. Hiding here symbolizes seclusion in the place of prayer, a space where obedience and communion with God intersect. It is in this act of trusting and obeying that clarity and divine instructions unfold.

  1. “And it shall be that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there”: God often provides in ways that defy human expectations. Ravens, birds typically known for stealing and hoarding food, were divinely instructed to deliver sustenance to Elijah both morning and evening. Similarly, the brook…a water source often shallower than a river—sustained Elijah during a time of drought when rivers had dried up. This highlights God’s boundless ability to provide for His people, even in the most improbable and dire circumstances. It serves as a reminder that His ways are higher than ours, and His provision knows no limits.

  1. And he arose, ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God”: Elijah had “more than bread”(partook of divine provision) and was empowered to journey for forty days and nights. It was after this that he heard God’s still small voice, following the thunder, wind, and earthquake. This encounter left him divinely strengthened and equipped, enabling him to pass on his anointing to Elisha, whose very bones would later raise the dead. When you dwell in God’s presence, His blessings are not only for you or just transformative but also transgenerational. In His presence, there is unmatched clarity, empowerment, and enduring strength.

I share this to remind you that this is our year of building with God (Isaiah 61:4)—a journey you have already begun with Him! Like Elijah, you have received more than bread; in this month of March, you have also received power. This power is not meant to be hidden, like the rich fool who believed his blessings were solely for earthly possessions (Luke 12:13-21). Instead, the power you have been given is meant to intercede for others, confront the mountains in your life, and live in a way that reflects the power of the Holy Spirit.

Remember, being rich toward yourself but poor toward God is not the way to live. Like the Apostles, we are called to obey and allow the Holy Spirit to reign fully in our lives so that we may bless others. Trusting God requires obedience, even when His ways seem unconventional. As seen in Elijah’s story, God provides abundantly even in the most challenging situations. The strength and clarity found in His presence empower us to use His blessings selflessly, letting the Holy Spirit guide us to fulfill His purpose.

Reflection

Am I truly open to being a channel of blessing to others, or am I solely focused on receiving without giving in return?

Confession

I declare that I am empowered by God’s provision and strength. I choose to trust His ways, obey His instructions, and use the blessings I receive to uplift others.
